Who can submit an article?

Any scholar who identifies as a woman or non-binary person, who has completed at least one year of a graduate program. We encourage second-year MAs, recent MA graduates, PhD students, or PhD post-docs to submit an article. This is a great CV builder, and a way to share your research with the public.

I'm not a historian, can I still submit an article?

We are accepting submissions from historians or those in a related field, including art history, archeology, gender studies, anthropology, and classics studies. If you study history in any capacity, and have written a paper with a historical-lens, submit it!

Is this a peer-reviewed publication?

No. Historically Modern is a volunteer, non-peer reviewed publication. By submitting an article, you stand by the quality and factuality of your research.

When do you stop taking submissions?

Our first submission period ends September 5th, 2025. Our second round for international submissions opens October 5th, 2025 and closes November 5th, 2025. Canadians can still submit during Round Two, however they will not receive prioritization during the selection period.

How many articles are you accepting?

We are looking to feature twelve academics. Each volume publishes twelve articles.

I've been previously published by Historically Modern, can I submit an article for Volume Two?

Yes, you may submit an article for consideration. However, priority will be given to those who were not published in Volume 1.

Can I submit an article that has been published before elsewhere?

No. All articles must not have been published previously in any capacity. If you have any further questions regarding this, please reach out to our team.

What kind of article can I submit?

Articles must be between 8-13 pages long (double-space, 12 point Times New Roman, excluding bibliography) on any subject within your specialization or field of study. If you stand by the quality of your work, submit it! You can send us course essays, major papers, or an op-ed you’ve written just for us! Casual or academic tone is acceptable.

  • We are not accepting historiographies or book reviews.

  • All submissions must be on the topic of history.

What citation format should I use?

All articles must be cited in Chicago Citation Style with footnotes and a corresponding bibliography. If you submit your article in APA/MLA, you will still be considered, but please note that you will be required to convert your citations to Chicago if your article is chosen. Our team will not change your citations for your.

Plagiarism & AI

By submitting your article, you are guaranteeing that your research is completely your own work, without plagiarism or the help of AI. Your article must be summited with full and correct citations. Any work suspected of plagiarism or AI generation will not be accepted.  

What happens if my article gets chosen?

If your article is selected for publication, you will be contacted by our team about the next steps. Before publication, your article will undergo a copy-edit process where it will be checked for grammar, legibility, spelling, syntax, and accessibility. We will not peer-review your research.

How many articles can I submit?

You can submit up to two articles, but only one can be selected for publication. To submit a second article, please submit an additional application form.

Will I receive compensation if my article gets chosen?

At this time, we are a volunteer publication. All submissions are done on a voluntary basis. However, should you be published with us, we are an excellent CV/resume builder and can be added to your LinkedIn under the volunteer section and/or publications!
